GRB Cosmology and the First Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are unique probes of the cosmic star formation history and the state of the intergalactic medium up to the redshifts of the first stars. In particular, the ongoing Swift mission might be the first observatory to detect individual Population III stars, provided that the massive, metal-free stars were able to trigger GRBs. Swift will empirically constrain the redshift at which Population III star formation was terminated, thus providing crucial input to models of cosmic reionization and metal enrichment.

Dominant gamma-ray bursts production in the early universe
It has been known that at least some of the observed gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced at cosmological distances and the GRB production rate may follow the star formation rate. We model the BATSE detected intensity distribution of long GRBs in order to determine their space density distribution and opening angle distribution. Our main results are: the lower and upper distance limits to the G...
متن کاملThe Redshift and the Ordinary Host Galaxy of Grb 970228
The gamma-ray burst of 28 February 1997 (GRB 970228) ushered in the discovery of the afterglow phenomenon. Despite intense study of the host galaxy, however, the nature of the host and the distance to the burst eluded the community. Here we present the measurement of the redshift of GRB 970228, and, based on its spectroscopic and photometric properties, identify the host as an underluminous, bu...
متن کاملINCIDENCE RATE OF GRB-HOST DLAs AT HIGH REDSHIFT
We study the incidence rate of damped systems associated with the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts Lya (GRB-host DLAs) as functions of neutral hydrogen column density ( ) and projected star formation rate (SFR) NH i using cosmological SPH simulations. Assuming that the occurrence of GRBs is correlated with the local SFR, we find that the median of GRB-host DLAs progressively shifts to lower va...
متن کاملGamma - Ray Bursts as a Probe of the Very High Redshift Universe Donald
There is increasingly strong evidence that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are associated with star-forming galaxies, and occur near or in the star-forming regions of these galaxies. These associations provide indirect evidence that at least the long GRBs detected by BeppoSAX are a result of the collapse of massive stars. The recent evidence that the light curves and the spectra of the afterglows of GR...
متن کاملIncidence Rate of GRB - HOST - DLAs 3
We study the incidence rate of damped Lyα systems associated with the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRB-HOST-DLAs) as functions of neutral hydrogen column density (NHI) and projected star formation rate (SFR) using cosmological SPH simulations. Assuming that the occurrence of GRBs is correlated with the local SFR, we find that the median NHI of GRB-HOST-DLAs progressively shifts to lower N...
